I sit on the curb, looking side to side, hoping a blue Honda would show up. I had been sitting here for a half an hour after soccer practice had ended and still, my mom hadn't shown up.
I sighed. In 7th grade and I still didn't have a phone. Maybe I should go to the nearest home and use their phone. I groan and stand up, stretching my sore muscles. Cleats in hand, I walk to the nearest house with a light on.
It wasn't the best choice I've made. The house was covered in fake cobwebs and spiders even though Halloween was a few months away. The shudders were closed but I could see a light streaming out of a few windows. I walk up tentatively and ring the bell, hoping whoever lived here would not answer. But just as I was going to ditch them and go to a nicer home, the door opened.
"Hello dear, selling cookies?" A lady said as she answered the door. I hesitate looking at the woman. She was wearing her pajamas and had frizzy hair, with icy blue eyes.
"No. I just need to use your phone," I say, "My mom still hasn't picked me up from soccer practice and I don't have a phone."
"No phone? Hmmmm. Yes dear you can come in. What is your name?"
"Emma."
"OK Emma, come on in." I follow her into the house, looking around. The sight hits me like a freight train. I see millions upon millions of dolls with pretty dresses. The scary part was their faces , all of the having a gruesome expression. I shudder and follow her farther into the house, hoping I would get out of there soon.
"Here is the phone sweetie."
"Thanks."
"No problem." I pick up the phone and dial my number.
"Answer. Answer. Answer," I mutter.
"Hello?"
"MOM! Where have you been? I've been sitting on the curb for an half hour! Come and get me!"
"Oh my gosh Emma I'm so sorry! I had a lot of work to do so I totally forgot!!" She frets.
"Mom, just come and get me."
"OK. Where are you calling from anyways?"
"This freaky old ladies house!" I whisper into the phone.
"Oh."
"Hurry!"
"OK, OK, I'm coming."
Ten minutes later my mom was here and I was seriously freaked. I had found a new part of her collection, clowns. Not the nice clowns, the freaky kind.....oh wait! EVERYTHING here is creepy! I hear the bell ring and rush to the door to answer it.
"Hey mom," I say.
"Hey Emma, get in the car, I want to thank this woman." She says, looking over my shoulder.
"OK," I say gratefully. I pick up my bag and rush to the car, looking reapetedly over my shoulder. My mom comes out a few minutes later, says something to the woman, and shudders.
"Man that lady IS freaky! I should have come sooner!" she says once in the car. I smile.
"So I talked to your dad and he and I agreed....that you can have your own phone!" I look at her excitedly.
"Oh my gosh THANK YOU!......Wait a minute! You just had to wait until AFTER the freaky lady? Oh thanks SO much!" I say sarcastically. We laugh all the way to the phone store.
I wake up from my dream, covered in sweat. I reach over to my bedside table to see if my phone had been stolen. Nope, still there. Dumb old lady! She just HAD to be such a freako that I had nightmares from her! I sigh and fall back asleep almost instantly.
The Next Day
"Mom where are my cleats?" I yell down the stairs.
"I don't know! Why?" Sam just texted me and said we should go practice!"
"Um, OK, but I still don't know where your cleats are! Wait a sec! You might have left them at the woman's house!"
"Aww man! But I DON'T wan't to go back THERE! I groan.
"I am NOT going to buy you new cleats if you can just go and get them! Come on let's go!" I groan and follow her down the stairs reluctantly.
10 Minutes Later
"Umm Mom I see police cars. Maybe this is a bad idea!"
"I only see a few! And besides it's not like they are surrounding the-"
"Old lady's house? Mom I think you gotta look a LITTLE closer!" There were tons of police cars around, totally surrounding the place.
"Can we PLEASE go? " I beg.
"No we'll explain and they'll understand."
"Yeah right mom, they'll question us for hours when we tell them we were here last night!" I look pointedly at her.
"We'll see," she said , getting out of the car.
"Well I'M staying here!" she fixed her icy stare at me.
"Fine, fine I'll go! But DON'T make me go in there!"
"I won't, but they might." I sigh, exasperated, and get out of the car. As we get closer to the building, I notice somethings seriously wrong. Did something get stolen? Did the lady have a heart attack or something crazy like that? My questions are half answered as I look closer and see someone on a rolling table covered in tarp. There feet were sticking out.
They were wearing slippers.
How? How did the old lady die? I stop dad in my tracks. I didn't Exactly want to find that out if the police were involved.
"Mom?" My voice is shaky. I swallo and try again?
"Mom? I just saw thee old lady under a tarp. Lets just-"
"Go?" she says, cutting me off, " I totally agree with you!" We run to the car and slam the doors after us.
"Lets go buy you some new cleats, shall we?"
"Love to," I pant.
"I'm going to have nightmares for forever now!" Mom says.
"You didn't even see HER! I'M the one who's going to have nightmares!"
"So true, so true."
One Day Later
I grunt in pain, hoping my cleats would break in soon.
"Emma! What's the problem?"
"New cleats, hopefully they'll break in soon!"
"The only way they'll break in is if you work harder!!"
"OK coach!" I say, sprinting now. All of a sudden I hear my phone ring.
"Who's phone is that?"
"Mine coach!"
"Go answer it!"
"OK!" jog over to my bag and pull out my phone, answering it just in time.
"Hello?"
"Hi, this is the FBI. We have some cleats with us that have your name on them. I'm guessing you're Emma, right?"
"Yeah. Where did you find them?" my uneasiness was growing steadily.
"We found them at a woman's house yesterday, blood all over them and shortly after, the dead lady. We are assuming you are the one who killed her."
"WHAT! I did NOT kill her!" By now I had gotten all of my teamates attention, and I walked out of earshot .
"Have you ever been to or seen a house with fake cobwebs and spiders all over it?"
"Yeah, but that was to call my mom since she hadn't picked me up from soccer practice!"
"How about I talk to you in person. I'm about two blocks away from where you practice."
"How do you know where I am?" I ask, hysteria creeping into my voice.
